How to Bloom

What does a girl need to bloom? I’ve been asking myself this question lately, as it’s now May (!) and this year’s mission has been exactly that.

I decided to look at it from a flower’s perspective, since when I think of bloom, I see petals outstretched and smell the sweetness only nature can produce.

Here’s what I (and the flowers) need to bloom:

  • Sunshine — In the literal sense most definitely, this is true. This winter I struggled with what might be my first experience with SAD. (The jury’s still out as I head to more specialists this week.) So I’ve been taking some naps in the sun. But also I like to think metaphorical sunshine is a moment of pure bliss, which I get when I play with Neka or play the piano.
  • Water — I must be a reincarnated mermaid the way I drink water. And my irrational fear of dehydration steered me clear of the desert for years. I’m often sticking my feet in mountain streams, and the ocean ranks at the top of things I miss about CA. But metaphorical water is a big deal for me too. I have very little of it in my astrological chart, which means it’s great that one of my closest friends is a Scorpio.
  • Food — We just made an amazing lime avocado risotto this weekend for our girls night. I don’t need to tell you I’m a fan of food and cooking in general. I’ve been feeding my mind a lot lately too, which means new books, coordinating a writer’s group and devouring amazing articles.

A good read makes you forget where you are.

  • Roots — I feel like I worked on this in the beginning of the year, what with the new piano and a new member of the family, but it’s true that plants roots grow throughout their life, so I’m learning to slowly settle into these things. I’ve got two new German courses for besser Deutsch sprechen. I’m exploring the smaller paths around my house (oh that’s where that ends up!) and we’ve got our first German wedding this month. I’ve also committed to another year of therapy. I want strong roots 🙂
  • Air — This weekend we hiked up up up to Schauinsland, the highest mountain in our area. And it was so clear, we saw the snow covered Alps while we picnicked on quinoa salad, hummus sandwiches and cupcakes. Now there is some air I can breathe! But metaphorically, I think that stretching and yoga represent ways for me to bloom, and in the past year I’ve been spending a lot more time in silence. The emptiness of it all refreshes me.

This post is more a friendly reminder to me that I am blooming, that I am trying and that I am making progress in this amazing year 2015. But I also want to know from you: What makes you bloom?
