42 Treat Ideas to Reward Yourself

When I first quit drinking, I really thought my life was going to be pretty dull. I really thought it might suck.

And while there were times when I got bored or it was really hard, mostly I was amazed to find that rewarding myself — treating myself nicely — was a big incentive to actually stay the course. And (shockingly) life actually became more fun.

Since a lot of my sober penpals asked for ideas for rewarding yourself, I thought I would share this list with my blog. These treats are designed to be mostly under $5. Just remember that money not spent on booze/cigarettes doesn’t have to be squirreled away for later. Invest in the now!

You can use these for creating all sorts of new habits, and really why not just be nice to yourself? That can be a new habit too! It’s a novel concept to a lot of us, sadly.

Some of them are non-food related, although I don’t recommend going über-healthy at the beginning of your quitting drinking/smoking journey. Stay focused. One thing at a time. So here you are:

Reward Yourself

  1. Trip to the library
  2. New e-book, used book or magazine and time to read it
  3. Flowers
  4. Fancy bottled bubbly water — San Pellegrino Limonatta anyone?
  5. Fancy fruit
  6. Lipstick
  7. Hot cocoa
  8. Pedicure
  9. Macaroons or some nice pastry
  10. Favorite pint of ice cream
  11. Movie at the theater
  12. Renting a movie from Amazon
  13. Walk around lake/next to river/in the woods
  14. Bath salts
  15. Nice face mask
  16. New cooking utensil
  17. iTunes songs
  18. Meet with friends for walk
  19. Nice pens
  20. Good cozy socks
  21. Special cheese and crackers
  22. Sushi
  23. Fresh juice
  24. Nail polish
  25. Pay someone to clean your house
  26. Grocery delivery
  27. Good tea
  28. Nice candle
  29. Permission to watch guilty pleasure TV shows
  30. Special coffees
  31. Pair of earrings
  32. Go to the dollar store and pick out five things
  33. Time to work on art projects
  34. Coffee and chocolate croissant with the paper in the morning
  35. Fresh buttered popcorn
  36. Ice cream cones (or better yet, a sundae!)
  37. Proper hot towel shave
  38. Get hair washed and styled
  39. Take an afternoon off work with no plans
  40. New plant for the house
  41. Skein of yarn
  42. Roast few bulbs of garlic and squeeze onto bruschetta

New makeup, TARGET , new coffee mug, magazines…. I also like to wander about Trader Joes or Whole Foods and buy something I’ve never tried or that’s different and eccentric (last week I bought an orangina….weird choice, tasty still).
